How to become a new Self-Containment Inspector with the NZMCA if you are not a registered plumber or an active NZMCA self-containment testing officer:

  • Step 1: Apply in writing to selfcontainment@nzmca.org.nz to become a vehicle inspector with your contact details and reasons why you want to join the team.
  • Step 2: The NZMCA will send your details to our local Area Committee to confirm they have the capacity to take on a new trainee self-containment inspector in your area.
  • Step 3: You will receive a training kit, including our 4-page inspection form, technical guidelines, and access to any additional training material. You will also need to complete a form confirming you have read, understood, and agree to follow the NZMCA’s technical guidelines, inspection form, training resources, and all other instructions while inspecting vehicles for the NZMCA.
  • Step 4: You will then need to observe a minimum of 15 vehicle inspections carried out under the new regulations, with an NZMCA self-containment inspector.
  • Step 5: Following your 15 observations, you will need to achieve at least 80% on an open-book assessment (a link to an online assessment paper will be provided).
  • Step 6: Upon passing the open book assessment, you will receive a confirmation letter and self-containment inspector kit from the NZMCA. The National Office will be in touch if you do not pass the open book assessment.

Once these 6 steps have been completed you are now qualified to start inspecting vehicles for the NZMCA under the new regulations.
