Description
This track can be walked from either end, but is easier going downhill from the old Callaghans township, finishing at Goldsborough.
From Callaghans, the track follows several steep ridgelines and water races, dropping down to the Shamrock Creek valley where the grade becomes easier for the final 1.5 km. The track passes many historic features, including mining tunnels, dams, sluice faces, tailings, and water-races.
Getting there
The track starts 24 km north-east of Hokitika, on Callaghans Road. 9 km north of Hokitika, turn off SH 6 onto Stafford Loop Road. Follow Stafford Loop Road for 13 km, then turn into Callaghnan Road.
Know before you go
Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
