Located in the heart of the Buller district, Westport is the region’s largest town with a population of over 6000.

Supposedly named after Westport in County Mayo in Ireland, the town is rich in Kiwi history. It’s seen many changes since the arrival of the first explorers – from the gold rush of the 1860s to the many coalminers who’ve called the town home. That rich history is celebrated with a number of historical interpretation centres and museums in the town.

Westport is centrally located on the Buller coastline with the region offering a wide range of experiences including wildbeaches to explore, the country’s most accessible seal colony at Cape Foul.
