When
About 4-5 times a year between August 2024 and May 2025 – this is likely to be two days of bait checking and filling bait stations approximately every 8 weeks but work times can be adapted to suit volunteer availability.
Description
Mapara Wildlife Reserve is 25 kilometres south of Te Kuiti in the Maniapoto/King Country district and home to an historic population of kōkako. DOC carries out ground baiting in the reserve every three years – primarily to control rats that put this kōkako population at risk. We are looking for volunteers to help with this valuable work.
What to expect
Volunteers will be carrying bait over steep terrain to fill, top-up or de-bait bait stations in the reserve, so a good level of fitness is required. A basic knowledge of the bush and bush navigation would be an advantage, although training will be given.
What to bring
Food for two days, outdoor bush walking equipment – boots, waterproofs etc – plus a sleeping bag, and overnight gear
What will be provided for you
Basic accommodation for one or two nights and transport to the site, subject to availability
How to apply
Please complete the online application form, and you will be contacted if more information is required.
