Volunteer for two weeks or more at any of these campsites:

• Peel Forest (Serviced, powered site)
• Waihi Gorge (Standard campsite)
• Pioneer Park (Standard campsite)
• Mt Nimrod (Standard campsite)
• Otaio Gorge (Standard campsite)

Tasks

The main role of a camp host is to help our visitors enjoy their stay in the right way. This is achieved by:

• checking that campers have paid camp fees and taking payment via a mobile eftpos machine when necessary
• providing local information to campers
• monitoring cleanliness of the campsite – daily cleaning of toilets and replenishing toilet paper when needed
• daily cleaning of any service areas provided, including toilets, and the replenishment of toilets
• reporting maintenance requirements to your nominated DOC staff.

What to expect
Accommodation: Applicants must have their own campervan, caravan or motorhome, or tent (which must be suitable for long term seasonal use).

Skills required:

• be approachable to a range of people, in a friendly manner
• be fluent in English
• be practical, hands on and able to think on the spot
• have a practical outlook
• some experience in a public volunteering role is relevant to this opportunity preferred but not essential.

Age: Applicants must be aged 20 years or over.

Dogs:

are not permitted at Peel Forest, Waihi Gorge, Mt Nimrod and Otaio Gorge campsites

are allowed at Pioneer Park campsite but must be kept under control at all times.

Nearest facilities: campsites are all within a 30-minute scenic drive to either Geraldine or Timaru.

What will be provided

• A site for your preferred type of accommodation for the duration.
• DOC camp host identification, high viz vest, uniform, and so on.
• All necessary cleaning equipment and materials for the services role.
• All health and safety requirements for the role.

Safety checks
Everyone who applies is subject to a DOC safety check, and a New Zealand Ministry of Justice criminal record check. Information about these checks will be provided after you apply.

• What happens after you apply
• Your application will be matched against our volunteer role availability.
• We’ll send you our required safety check Part 1 form for completion.
• We’ll contact you either by phone or email about your interview questions – you can contact us at any time about the role.
• We’ll email your referees their required safety check Part 2 form with interview questions about your suitability for the role.
• We’ll request a New Zealand Ministry of Justice criminal record check – this takes around 3 days.
• We’ll check all your information provided for suitability and provide you with any other information requirements.
• On receipt of your New Zealand Ministry of Justice approval, this will be valid for 3 years from date of issue (and entitle you to volunteer for other DOC volunteer roles throughout New Zealand that may require safety checks).
• We’ll work with you to find dates that are suitable to you and arrange for a date to complete your induction training.
