DOC volunteer group, the Ahuriri Estuary Restoration Working Group work to protect and improve the Ahuriri Estuary. The group focuses mainly on weed control and native planting each winter.
Occasionally the group travel to other reserves in Hawke’s Bay to give them a little love and attention. We would love you to join us.

First Thursday of every month, 8:30 am to 12 pm (except January).
Description
The group’s main aim is to enhance Ahuriri Estuary by focusing on weed control. We mainly target sea lavender, ice plant and broom.
Volunteers usually work on the lower estuary, covering about 40 hectares and sometimes expanding further up.
Planting days are held each winter. The group plant 300 – 600 native species per year, including:
At times, saltmarsh ribbonwood is also planted around the margins of the estuarine area.
What to expect
You’ll be using gardening tools and doing physical work. Volunteers need to have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable using gardening tools. No specific skills are required.
What to bring
Morning tea and gardening tools are provided. You are welcome to bring their own tools if you prefer.
