There's a ride for all abilities with a growing network of off-road trails in spectacular landscapes with foodie experiences, culture, and activities along the way. Or if you're into mountain biking, there's loads of trails from easy to epic. Ready to explore? Below is a list of some of our members' favourite places to stay where the bike trail is often out the back gate.

You can stay for the very affordable rate of $5 per adult per night (children stay free). If you just need to use the facilities and you’re not staying the night, you can fill up with freshwater, empty out at the dump station, rubbish and recycling bins - all for free. And bonus – arrive and leave when you’re ready. There’s no check in or out time at our NZMCA Parks.
Lowburn NZMCA Park (Site ID 8673)
Very pleasant cycling ride on the Lake Dunstan Rail Trail that's right outside the back gate - a real bonus. Our kids enjoyed cycling around the park. Handy to Cromwell, Wanaka, Queenstown and Alexandra. Cute bench seat out the back gate right next to the manmade lake. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Cromwell.
Motueka NZMCA Park (Site ID 6138)
Handy to town - 2km walk or cycle into Motueka with plenty of shops and eating places. Bike trail at the front gate and lots of lovely walking tracks, especially the spit. A great stop before doing DOC's Abel Tasman Great Walk. The cinema is over the road. Psst, has ice creams, lollies, and popcorn!
Invercargill NZMCA Park (Site ID 9381)
Loved the great walking and bike track along the estuary. Well situated for convenience to town and all its history and attractions. Queens Park is amazing. Love the nautical theme. Perfect stop if you're going to Stewart Island.
Manapouri NZMCA Park (Site ID 9135)
Wow what a beautiful site with the mountains in the backdrop. A great base for adventures around Fiordland and 20 min drive to Te Anau. Great little 1.4km wetlands walk to the east of the back of the camp - perfect for doggos. Everything we need for a comfortable and interesting stay with lots to do on our doorstep. Great facilities. The Church definitely a good value dinner venue. Manapouri is a great little community. Easy bike ride down to the village and lakefront. Lake 2 Lake cycle trail worth doing if you have the time. Listening to the neighbouring deer farm inhabitants roaring is thoroughly entertaining too.
Eriksen Rd NZMCA Park (Site ID 3798)
Beautifully landscaped and sheltered. Maranui golf course across the road with NZMCA discount. Handy to the beach and the excellent shopping at Napier. A bike riders paradise. The vegetable garden was a pleasure to admire. Loved being able park in a big meadow with lovely plantings. Beautiful open grassy space, tastefully planted with natives and a huge shelter belt. Perfect spot to explore the area. Enjoyed a fabulous meal at the cider and micro brewery around the corner on Awatoto Rd, the Filter Room, easy e-biking distance! Ashburton NZMCA Park (Site ID 7756)
A great park and close to the sports complex, showers for $4 or $7 to use pool facilities. They have a great cafe called EAT - yummy coffee, food and excellent service. Walking and cycling tracks nearby beside the northern bank of the Ashburton River. In the hub of mid-Canterbury with loads of activities for the whole family including Lake Hood, to play on or in the water. Trotts Gardens is worth a visit. Kaiaua NZMCA Park (Site ID 1217)
Lovely site, good walks and nice views over the field to Coromandel. Great bike riding across the road. The river will be lovely in summer for swimming and kayaking - the water hole looks very inviting for a swim. 2 min walk to the fish n chip shop and good value meals at the pub.
Lumsden NZMCA Park (Site ID 9279)
Quiet camp in a nice sheltered setting. Lovely spot with access to the cycle trail just down the road. Loved the bushy perimeter and the tree-lined entrance. Short walk to town and a great pub with very good meals. Also recommend Route 6 Café.

Okaihau Rail Stay POP (Site ID 362)
A real little gem. So peaceful and handy to the cycle trail. Okaihau village is great. The Rail Stay theme is lovely. We come back here every year and love it - especially the proximity to the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail. Beautiful gardens and quiet. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Kaikohe.
Pigeons Rest POP (Site ID 361), Okaihau
A peaceful oasis with shops and a cafe nearby. Ideal place to stay if cycling the Twin Coast Cycle Trail. Terry drove our vehicle out to Horeke to pick us up at the end of the amazing ride there. A perfect place to safely leave your van while biking the trail. Recommend visiting the boulders while you're at Horeke. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Kaikohe.
Double or Quits Vineyard POP (Site ID 3840), Hastings
I wanted a nice bike ride around the vineyards so this was a great location and Ali provided me with a map and all the information I required. The parking also provides you with grapevines at your door, so is a lovely relaxing spot. Great base to cycle wineries in the Bridge Pa area. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Hastings.
Bannockburn Lodge POP (Site ID 8693), Cromwell
A treasure right on the pathway and a good starting point for the Lake Dunstan Cycling and Walking trail. Dog-friendly. We woke up to the sun coming up over the mountains. Stunning view and fantastic location for the wineries. Lovely hosts and what a view! More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Cromwell.
Kevin & Diana Rasmussen POP (Site ID 392), Kaikohe
Very convenient place to park while we biked the Twin Coast Cycle Trail. Just a short bike ride to the main street. Lovely hosts and feijoas for Africa at the right time of the year. Waipiata Domain POP (Site ID 8765), Ranfurly
Fabulous quiet spot with the rail trail right next door. A lovely pub just over the road with its famous pies and great meals. Big flat grassy area perfect for the dog. The Kakanui Ranges are a wonderful backdrop to this camp.
Goldfields Railway POP (Site ID 2337), Waihi
Great location. Took the train excursion to Waikino!! Lovely cafe at Waikino too. Would never have taken the train ride if we hadn't stopped at this POP so win-win. Excellent location for the rail trail. The campsite and train accepted our dog. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Waihi.
The Junction Cottage POP (Site ID 8566), Queenstown
What a little gem! Pleasant rural spot, peaceful and pretty. We loved all the bike rides and river swims. A great location near to Queenstown and Arrowtown. Beautiful setting with very lambs, friendly and inquisitive sheep and chickens! Perfect for accessing the Arrow River Bridges Trail to ride into Arrowtown, and on towards Lake Hayes.

Links View Holiday Park (Site ID 6722), Hokitika
Absolutely gorgeous place and very welcoming hosts with a wealth of local knowledge and stories. Excellent location for cycling parts of the Wilderness Trail. Kevin offers a shuttle service to other sections of the trail. We biked from Milltown (near Cowboy Paradise) to camp via Hokitika, 40km. The owners put on happy hour, providing sausage rolls, bread, cheese and pesto. Fresh free-range eggs for purchase.
Crow's Nest (Site ID 8745), Oturehua
Nice, rustic and quirky place - perfect if you're doing the Otago Rail Trail. Peaceful and relaxing with the most amazing old general store. Bill (and his dog Jimmy) were very welcoming and had many helpful tips. Walking distance to the pub - what more could you want?
Waikawa Bay Holiday Park (Site ID 6961), Picton
Close to walking and bike tracks. Lovely camp full of character with funky art, lime tree and herb garden! A lovely find close to the ferry and not too big. The fish n chip shop on the main road back towards Picton was good. The off-road walkway to Picton took around 50 min each way. An easy pleasant walk.

Omokoroa Domain (Site ID 2507)
A fabulous spot close to the beach and a lovely harbour with walking and cycling tracks nearby. We did the 35km bike trail to Wairoa River Bridge. Hard to beat. Very quiet. Good cafe closeby and a great playground if you have the young ones with you. Close to the boat ramp, a restaurant, dairy and coastal walk/cycleway.
Paeroa Railway Reserve (Site ID 2309)
Ideal place to camp if you're cycling the Hauraki Rail Trail. Rode the trail from Paeroa to Waihi and return. A very easy picturesque trail. Power available for $5 (pay at Caltex). A very short walk to town with a Countdown supermarket nearby. Paeroa seems very supportive to motor caravanners the locals are very friendly. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Paeroa.
Little Waipa Reserve (Site ID 1712), Arapuni
Gorgeous, peaceful, large grassed riverside reserve with lovely trees and water views. Joins picturesque river bike trails. We enjoyed kayaking through the glowworm canyon about 3-4km down the road. Lots of birds, fantails, ducks, swans etc... The mist on the lake was special. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Rotorua.
Te Ahiaua Reserve (Site ID 2972), Waiotahi
A beautiful spot by the lagoon with lovely beach views and walks. Stayed here a night to do the 9km Dunes cycle trail. Lovely estuary and sea views. Perfect for kayaking. Excellent access, lovely grass to walk on, and the beach right beside you. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly Whakatane.
Lake Rotomanu (Site ID 4174), New Plymouth
Lovely spot next to the lake. Amazing place to stay especially with the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge cycle and walkway so close. We found the jet skis and boats entertaining. Someone caught a trout. More reasons to visit Motorhome Friendly New Plymouth.
